YMMV / The Simpsons S5 E9 "The Last Temptation of Homer"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Were the doctors at Hibbert Moneymaking Organization really concerned about Bart or were they just seeking excuses to charge as much as possible from the Simpson Family's medical insurance?
    • When the gas leaked through the "protective" glass window in the opening, Lenny suggests everyone should hide at his home until the storm blows over. Was he offering his friends safety until the plant was safe to operate again? Or until they were no longer blamed for the incident?
    • A more cynical reading of the ending is that Homer really did sleep with Mindy but imagined Marge in her place to assuage his guilt. This isn't helped by his hallucinations and fantasies related to Mindy throughout the episode and the way the final scene is framed to briefly fake out the viewer: the camera pans upward from Marge's legs before revealing her face, and she wears lingerie the same color as Mindy's gown and is drawn with a subtly fuller figure than normal.note
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • The secret meeting place for nerds that Martin takes Bart to. It comes out of nowhere (quite literally, since Martin pulled Bart into a secret entrance), has a very minimal connection to the overall story, and once the scene ends, the characters never mention it again.
    • The scene of Charlie getting sucked through a tube and ending up dancing on a table for men in India. It does have some relevance to the overall storyline in that Mindy ends up being hired to replace him, but the dialogue which establishes this is pretty vague.
  • Delusion Conclusion: A fairly well-known alternate reading of the ending is that Marge's appearance was just Homer hallucinating her coming to him as a means of coping with his infidelity.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the anti-nuclear advocates at the energy convention shouts "No more Chernobyls!" to Homer and Mindy. Homer would later go on to prevent a similar disaster in "King-Size Homer." Mr. Burns even cites Chernobyl himself when praising Homer for his act:
Mr. Burns: Homer Simpson, we thank you for your valiant efforts in reducing this potential Chernobyl to a mere Three Mile Island.
  • Memetic Mutation: Due to a certain part of his name, one can find quite a few jokes claiming that Joey Jo-Jo Jr. Shabadoo is actually a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure character.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Joey-Joe-Joe-Junior Shabadoo, the man who runs away crying after Moe (unknowingly) insults his name.
