YMMV / The Simpsons S17 E8: "The Italian Bob"

Go To

  • Fanon Discontinuity: Fans usually ignore the presence of Sideshow Bob's Italian wife and son as seen. Possibly Canon Discontinuity as they're never seen or mentioned again after "Funeral for a Fiend".
  • Fridge Brilliance: The old woman who claimed "Kentucky" means "whore" in Italian was lying: Homer had accidentally insulted her when he complained they don't speak English, especially as she had apparently gone through the trouble of learning how to at least understand it, and took the chance to slap and troll him at the same time.
  • Genius Bonus: Bob and his family try to kill the Simpsons onstage during a performance of Pagliacci, and Lisa tries to convince the audience that it's not All Part of the Show to no avail. This is precisely what happens during the second act of Pagliacci, with the protagonist, a Commedia delle'Arte performer, murdering his wife and her lover in front of an enthralled audience who don't realize what's happening.
  • Good Bad Translation:
    • "Plagiarismo" is not the correct Italian word for "plagiarism". It's "plagio".
    • Krusty makes a joke about "a wife showing him her 'Naples'". The joke falls flat because one Italian correctly remarks: "We call it 'Napoli.'"
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Homer makes rude facial expressions and hand gestures to some Italian people, prompting Lisa to say "Dad, don't act like Mussolini", to which Homer says "Oh, I thought I was doing Donald Trump." In 2016, Trump got in trouble when his presidential campaign's Twitter page retweeted a Mussolini quotation.
    • The scene where the police burst into Sideshow Bob's home, with Wiggum having ignored that Bob has not lived in the building for months, shooting up the place with assault rifles during a child's birthday party does not come off so funny after the Sandy Hook shooting and numerous real life cases of police breaking into the wrong house and it ending badly(e.g. Breonna Taylor)
    • When Wiggum tries to break the tension with the children whose party he just shot up, he notes the Penn State banner and notes that his cousin Mark Wiggum played sports there. This would be a lot more cringe inducing with the Jerry Sandusky pedophilia scandal that broke 6 years later, which badly damaged the Penn State sports program.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When picking where he should move to, Sideshow Bob initially becomes disgruntled when his knife lands on Orlando. Thanks to The Simpsons Ride, which has Sideshow Bob as the antagonist, he technically did move to Orlando.
  • Moment of Awesome: Sideshow Bob's opera singing is regarded as one of the best moments of the show.
