  • Homer tells Marge he's planning a "surprise" for the execution while ravenously eating his last meal, saying his stomach will be full when it "goes off." This is actually Truth in Television, as many inmates will void their bowels at the moment of execution (and indeed many people will at the moment of death regardless of how they die due to the sphincter relaxing.) For this reason, in Real Life, inmates generally wear a diaper as they are put to death.
  • The scene involving Gil Gunderson's obviously incompetent defending of Homer and Marge is also, unfortunately, Truth in Television in many capital murder trials. Studies around the time this episode was shown noted that in many southern states in the USA that still carry out executions, as many as one in five defense lawyers assigned to capital cases were subsequently suspended or disbarred by their state's respective bar association.
