• Aluminum Christmas Trees: Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio is shown playing a few bars of The Simpsons theme song on his guitar before he introduces Homer. This wasn't a throwaway gag for the episode, but a reference to something Anastasio actually did for years at Phish concerts as part of a series of "secret language" signals they had taught their fans. The audience is supposed to react to the Simpsons theme cue by yelling "D'oh!", but for the episode, that was changed to a generic "Boom!" in order to avoid a Celebrity Paradox. This cue even occasionally showed up in the song the band is shown performing in the episode, "Run Like an Antelope".
• Hilarious in Hindsight: First aired 12 years before Marijuana Simpson.
• Memetic Mutation: "Could Jesus microwave a burrito so hot that he himself could not eat it?" ^note A question Homer asks Ned Flanders while stoned, which has caught on as a parody of the kind of strange questions stoners ask, specifically spoofing the omnipotence paradox.
• Once Original, Now Common: Nowadays, it doesn’t seem so shocking for Homer to smoke marijuana, but back in 2002, it surprised people with the fact that Homer was doing so.
