YMMV / The Simpsons S 11 E 15 Missionary Impossible

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: The episode has a lot of bizarre moments like PBS personalities chasing Homer (including the Teletubbies inexplicably firing lasers out of the antenna...things on their heads), Bart taking over for Homer at work and getting yelled at by Mr. Burns, Homer tripping out on hallucinogenic toads, and seeing cartoon characters like Bender and Thurgood Stubbs manning the phones during the pledge drive. Considering the general Denser and Wackier tone of the season up to this point, none of this is that over the top, but the Gainax Ending where the show is interrupted by a pledge drive for FOX definitely places it here.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Elmo taunts Homer by saying "Elmo knows where you live!" Elmo as a threatening stalker was a funny subversion at the time, but when his performer Kevin Clash resigned from Sesame Street in 2012 after accusations of sexual misconduct, not so much.
  • Memetic Mutation: Jebus, Homer's Malapropism for Jesus, has become such a ubiquitous ingredient in internet snarking about religion that many people aren't aware that it originated as a throwaway gag (well, two throwaway gags) in this episode.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The butterfly scene.
  • Paranoia Fuel: "Elmo knows where you live!"
  • Pop-Culture Isolation: If you lived outside the United States (or in a Canadian province that picked up a PBS feed or reran the shows on one of their channels) when this episode premiered you were probably wondering why the likes of Mr. Rogers, the Teletubbies and Sesame Street characters were randomly in the crowd chasing Homer Simpson, since you likely hadn't heard of PBS, and those three shows would've aired on different channels in your country.
