• Aluminum Christmas Trees: There is a "Goliath II" in the King James Bible, though it is Goliath's brother rather than his son.
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The ending in which the Simpsons are surprised by the Apocalypse and sent to Hell. Yet none of the other episodes ever mentioned this incident again. Its extreme Negative Continuity, turn to the supernatural, and apocalyptic ending make it resemble a Treehouse of Horror episode, and it's a rare example of a regular episode with those qualities.
• Bizarro Episode: The episode outright ends with Springfield being struck down by a hellfire apocalypse, complete with the Flanderses ascending up to Heaven (and Lisa before being dragged back down by Homer) and the Simpsons actually descend down a literal stairway to Hell!
