YMMV / The Simpsons S10 E13 "Homer to the Max"

Go To

  • Alternative Joke Interpretation: When Bill Clinton is dancing with Marge at the garden party and feeling that she may think she's not good enough for him and assuring her that she is, even claiming that "he's done it with pigs", did he mean really unattractive women or actual pigs?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: A joke is made about how network TV loves cartoons because they don't have to pay the actors well and they can be replaced (as seen with Ned Flanders being voiced by Karl Wiedergott instead of Harry Shearer). This is a triple whammy wince-inducing moment:
    • This episode aired around the time that the voice actors and FOX were in the middle of a brutal pay dispute and FOX threatened to have all the major voice actors replaced with sound-alikes if they didn't agree to FOX's offer.
    • In May 2015, Harry Shearer (the voice actor for Ned Flanders — and other characters note ) announced that he was leaving the show (which had just been renewed for seasons 27, 28, and part of 29), with no word yet on whether Shearer's characters will be written out or have a new voice actor. Thankfully, in July 2015, the producers announced they'd struck a deal with Shearer, who would stay with the show.
    • In Spain, this was the last season where Homer was voiced by Carlos Revilla, who was also in charge of the translation, adaptation and casting. After his death between seasons 11 and 12, the dub's quality took a nosedive and many other actors left his company or retired.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The gag about nobody knowing who Jeremy Piven is became this after Piven had major success on Entourage.
    • After Homer renames himself to Max Power, he says "Kids, there's three ways to do things- the right way, the wrong way and the Max Power way". A year after this episode, the Max Steel TV series premiered and its similarly named hero had "We're doing this the Max Steel Way" as a catchphrase.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Uh oh! Spaghettios!"
    • Homer hiding in the attic and peeking out the window has become a meme of neighbours or strangers spying on odd activities, for some reason.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: Among the shows seen in the mid-season line-up is All in the Family 1999, which has Carroll O'Connor breaking character as Archie Bunker, wishing he hadn't wasted his money from the original show. In real life, O'Connor would pass away in June 2001, two years after this episode aired.
