YMMV / The Shins

Go To

  • Creepy Awesome: The Suited Gentlemen in "The Rifle's Spiral" music video. A trio of uncanny magicians tracking down the rabbit and the heroine.
  • Les Yay: According to James Mercer, "Phantom Limb" is about a young lesbian couple dealing with the prejudices of the small town they live in.
  • Moment of Awesome: See here.
  • More Popular Spin-Off: They were originally a side-project of Flake Music, a band who released a single studio album and weren't very well-known outside of their hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Most of the same musicians played on both Flake Music's When You Land Here, It's Time To Return and The Shins' Oh, Inverted World, and Flake Music had a song called "The Shins".
  • Never Live It Down: They will forever be associated with that one scene in Garden State.
  • Tear Jerker: See here.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Political?: "So Says I" contains thinly-veiled metaphors for communism and capitalism (and points out the flaws of each).
    • Same goes for "No Way Down", a criticism of free trade and its impact on the manufacturing base in Western nations.
