  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Considering how the book does away with Moriarty as Holmes' Archenemy, its telling that later adaptations of Holmes such as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows assign the "starting the Great War early" plot to James Moriarty over some random baron.
  • Tearjerker: Holmes undergoes one final hypnosis and reveals WHY he made Moriarty the villain in his head and why Mycroft has such control over him: Moriarty was the one who told Sherlock that his mother had cheated on his father, leading Mr. Holmes to kill Mrs. Holmes and her lover before killing himself. Sherlock repressed the memory while Mycroft never forgave Moriarty for what he did.
