- Alternate Character Interpretation: Did Lily kill her mother? She is told that she picked up the gun as a toddler and shot her accidentally, not knowing what the weapon was, but even Lily herself wonders if T-Ray did it and is lying to her. The movie explicitly shows a flashback that has her doing it. Word of God states that T-Ray was telling the truth about the accident. She wanted to show that sometimes there's senseless violence in the world that isn't anyone's fault rather than killing off Lily's mother in a Too Good for This Sinful Earth moment by her abusive husband.
- Aluminum Christmas Trees: Lily and August decide to have Coke with peanuts in them for dessert one night. Some thought this was a shared quirk between Lily, her mother, and August, since June's response was that of disgust. However, Coke with peanuts in it is actually a thing people do in the Deep South.
- What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: It's quite a dark novel full of Family-Unfriendly Violence, Abusive Parents, and even suicide.
