- Memetic Mutation: The scene of Géronte complaining about his son getting captured on a Turkish galley (« Que diable allait-il faire dans cette galère ? » — "What the devil was he doing on that galley!?") was quotable enough that it gave birth to a colloquial French expression, « Quelle galère ! » ("What a galley!", meaning "What a mess!" or "What a hassle!"). Although The Schemes of Scapin sure popularized it, it should be noted the scene wasn't created by Molière, but inspired by a similar one from an earlier play, Le Pédant joué by Cyrano de Bergerac.
