- Base-Breaking Character: You'll probably find just as many people who like Button-Bright as people who think he's quite irritating. Most agree though that he does get a bit more bearable in later books, and it's worth remembering how young he's supposed to be in this book. We see a much more mature and articulate Button-Bright in his next appearance, Sky Island, incidentally one of Baum's non-Oz fantasies.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Polychrome tends to be one of the more popular characters from the later books.
- Ho Yay: The accompanying illustration of Dorothy greeting Ozma with "rapturous" kisses is the trope illustrator on the Literature page.
- Values Dissonance:
- Not in the usual "no longer PC" sense, but you can tell this book was written before Too Smart for Strangers was a trope, from the way Dorothy casually accompanies a strange homeless man.
- The Scoodlers may be sufficiently non-human enough to avoid this, but their similarities to a Cannibal Tribe might be considered an offensive caricature to some.
