  • Base-Breaking Character: Kenny. Either you think he's an Adorkable and charming protagonist who represents the LGBT community well, or you think he's a selfish, whiny, egotistical brat whose Camp Gay personality does more harm to the community than good. The actor appointing himself the grand judge of how people are allowed to come out over Colton Haynes' doing it didn't help.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Kenny's new boyfriend Brett (who was introduced in Season 2) has quickly become a popular character, namely for averting many stereotypes that cause some viewers to dislike Kenny and for Sean Grandillo's excellent acting.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Lacey, a classmate of Kenny's and Jimmy's girlfriend for two episodes, is played by Kaylee Bryant. Bryant would find greater fame two years later as Josie Saltzman on Legacies.
  • The Woobie: Say what you will about Kenny, but it's very heartbreaking that his parents treat him differently when he comes out as gay, and is no longer their favorite as a result. It's also disheartening to think about how hard it is for him to be the only gay person in a family of strict Catholics, especially with two parents who look down on him and try to repress him.
