• Tear Jerker: The very first story opens with Edward being mocked by the other engines for being smaller and weaker than them. Edward is visibly in tears until the driver feels sorry for him and asks him to come out.
• Unintentionally Sympathetic: Henry in "The Sad Story of Henry", due to the fact that his punishment came off as a bit too harsh. Even Edmund Ward, the publisher agreed and demanded that Reverend Awdry give Henry a happy ending.
