YMMV / The Punisher: Born

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The mini-series has a different take on WHY Frank became the Punisher. Frank fell in love with killing and made a deal with an unknown supernatural entity (or just plainly went mad, you choose) to fight a war that would last forever. He wasn't informed until later that the price would be his family, at which point the supernatural entity makes Frank forget that they ever made the deal.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The final issue begins with an unsubtle Take That! against various companies that have been accused of being war profiteers, among them Northrop Grumman. In 2017 Marvel announced that it would be partnering with Grumman and releasing comics starring a Corporate-Sponsored Superhero team called the NGENnote  (Naturally, this didn't go over very well, and Marvel subsequently announced that they had dissolved the partnership).
  • Nightmare Fuel: Much of the final issue, but special mention has to go to the Cover Drop at the very beginning, which has a Marine clutching his face because his eyes are gone, while Goodwin waxes biblical and apocalyptic about the "Great Beast" of the military-industrial complex and how it is their turn to feed it, followed by the hellish two-page spread of the NVA launching their all-out assault on Valley Forge. "The Last Day", indeed. The signature scene mentioned below also qualifies as one.
  • Signature Scene: By far one of the most iconic images in the entire Punisher MAX series would have to be from the fourth issue, which features a nightmarish splash page of Frank Castle standing alone, with bloodshot eyes that give him a demonic cast, bleeding from several gunshot wounds, holding the remnants of a shattered M16 that he used to clobber half a dozen NVA soldiers that lay dead at his feet. Made all the more frightening by the smoke behind him forming an absolutely demonic version of his trademark skull.
