YMMV / The Public Enemy (1931)

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Bet you didn't know it was based on a book called Beer and Blood?
  • Award Snub: It received one Academy Award Nomination for Best Story. James Cagney's perfomance wasn't nominated.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: The film opens with a title card explicitly stating that the studio did not seek to "glorify the hoodlum or criminal". It makes the gangster cooler, more interesting, and more important than his straight-laced brother.
  • Genius Bonus: At about half an hour into the film, Powers and Doyle enter the nightclub "Black and Tan." Since the film has much to do with Prohibition, this is a clever pun by the filmmakers, as a black and tan is also a mixture of beers (typically stout and ale, hence its name).
  • Moral Event Horizon: Whatever sympathy you may have had for Powers, no matter what he did, instantly evaporates after needlessly murdering a horse after a friend of his died riding it.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The final scene, where Tom's mother is still upstairs preparing a room for her boy while a... package is dropped off on her doorstep. After mostly bloodless cinematic violence, it's quite a shock.
