- The film has many an anticlimactic Red Herring that abruptly disappears from the narrative, such as a nerdy couple who make love in the basement of the graduation hall (who are not among the Prowler's victims, subverting many genre-savvy viewers' expectations) and the wheelchair-bound Major Chatham (who is presented as an unlikely suspect but is never even remarked on after this scene even though the final confrontation takes place in his home).
- Narrowed It Down to the Guy I Recognize: Farley Granger, the most known and veteran name amongst the cast, turns out to be the killer.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Some viewers have noted that the killer's military theme could have been developed further than "stabs people with a pitchfork."
