• Awesome Music: The opera contains some very lovely music that can be recognized in Bizet's later work, Carmen. The Friendship Duet is also one of the best duets in opera.
• Cliché Storm: There are lots of clichés and coincidences in this opera.
• Ho Yay: Nadir and Zurga. Where do we even begin? Their duet, "Au fond de temple saint", is filled to the brim with Ho-Yay, as make declarations like "Let us share the same fate, let us be united until death", they also hug and hold each other during the duet, and at the end, Zurga dies saving Nadir. This is especially strong in some productions, such as the Met production with Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien, or even in the Teatro La Fenice production from 2004, with Yasu Nakajima and Luca Grassi.
• Tear Jerker: Act III, when Zurga is left alone to wait his fate after helping Nadir and Leila escape.
• The Woobie: Poor Zurga is definitely this.
