• Adaptation Displacement: The film is much better remembered than the original novel by Edward Lewis Wallant.
• Jerkass Woobie: Sol. Yes, he looks down on everyone else and treats them all with disdain (making occasional exceptions for Marilyn and Ortiz, both of whom he ultimately rejects too), but considering everything he's been through, it's not hard to understand why he's cut himself off from humanity, and himself, that way.
• Retroactive Recognition: Morgan Freeman made his film debut as an extra near the end of the movie.
