YMMV / The Patchwork Girl of Oz

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The chapter with the living house, which Ojo spends the night in. The disembodied voice is never explained, and the episode is never brought up again afterwards.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Scraps was quite popular at the time the books came out, and still is among fans of the Oz books. She got to join the main cast in future books, a rare honor for newly-introduced characters at this point in the series, while Ojo and other characters introduced in this book got cameos if they were lucky.
    • Ojo is a popular protagonist character to use in a lot of modern Pseudo-Canonical Fic. For instance, a four book series was written and published by Paul Dana about the further adventures of Ojo and Button-Bright, who Baum briefly mentioned became friends in later Oz books, but never expanded upon.
  • The Woobie: Modern readers often feel sad for Victor the Phonograph, who is cruelly abused and threatened by the main characters for playing loud ragtime music. This is despite the fact that he has just been brought to life, with all the life experience of a newborn baby, and probably can’t even conceptualize the idea that he is being loud and annoying. A few short stories have been written in more modern times giving him a kinder fate. For example, the story “A Quiet Victory” by Marcus Mebes, featured in the collection The Lost Tales of Oz , follows his life afterwards, and how he ended up living with the Musicker, another hated musical character from The Road to Oz.
