YMMV / The Paper Bag Princess

Go To

  • Broken Aesop: The story's feminist moral is undermined by the ending, which has Elizabeth leave with the dragon, effectively relying on a male character.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: Elizabeth rejects Ronald and decides not to marry him, but she's still naked and homeless, and running off into the sunset isn't gonna fix that. Not to mention the environmental effects of the dragon burning down all of those forests.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Originally, instead of giving Ronald a "The Reason You Suck" Speech, Elizabeth was going to punch him in the nose. This is exactly what another princess did when she found out her fiancĂ© was a Prince Charmless decades after the book was published.
  • Misaimed Fandom: There are many, many accounts of preschool-aged children failing to grasp the story's feminist message, most notably as recounted by Bronwyn Davies in Frogs and Snails and Feminist Tales. Often, they'll ask for the story to be re-written so that it ends with Elizabeth marrying Ronald.
