YMMV / The Odd Life of Timothy Green

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Not every married couple are capable of being good parents. No kids are better than abused kids.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: The story that is described to the adoption agent comes across as embellished to the point of implausibility. Most of the adults who interact with the Greens are portrayed as horrible people. Jim and Cindy frequently brag about Timothy's accomplishments and even fabricate some of them, just as a way of sticking it to their relatives. Timothy's only friend is told to stay away from Timothy himself, but there is no evidence that she did anything wrong. Hence, there is a good chance that the Greens are Unreliable Narrators, and that Cindy's sister and Jim's father are actually comparatively decent individuals.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The Greens adopt a little girl...after they’ve told a story that may or may not be fully true, and they've implied they hate their own relatives for little to no reason and are unable to fix their parenting mistakes because they see them as natural.
  • Glurge: In the running for the Glurgiest Disney movie of the 21st century, if not ever.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The guy who tries to cut off Timothy’s leaves is none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda.
  • Tear Jerker: Regardless of how one feels about the film, Timothy's departure will likely cause a few tears to fall.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Jim and Cindy would be major woobies if done correctly, but the more negative aspects of their lives seem too exaggerated to be even remotely realistic, so it is difficult to sympathize with the couple. Their worldview about making mistakes shows that they are particularly unworthy of being parents.
