YMMV / The Nun

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Valak. See that page for details.
  • Contested Sequel: The movie is viewed as unnecessary and uninteresting by some (as reflected in the critical reviews) while some see it as one of the better films in the series, on par with The Conjuring and Annabelle: Creation.
  • Critic-Proof: Despite getting mixed to negative reviews, the movie had the 2nd highest September opening weekend in history (not adjusted for inflation), and the highest opening weekend in the very successful Conjuring franchise, beating the next-highest entry by about $12 million.
  • Critical Dissonance: While The Nun is negatively reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, it has a So Okay, It's Average rating on IMDb, and there are some casual fans who like it quite a bit.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: It's generally agreed that Frenchie is the best part of the movie, due to him being almost the only source of the film's comic relief (it doesn't hurt that he's pretty good looking either).
  • Memetic Mutation: "OMG Boyz! IT'S DA NUN" Explanation
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Burke facing off a crowd of approaching demons, making a fiery cross in the middle of the floor.
    • Frenchie freeing Irene from possession with a slight of hand.
    • Irene spitting the Holy Blood in Valak's face.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The bartender who talks to Frenchie about the sinister happenings in the valley due to the evil leaking out of the abbey.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The film is best known for its marketing campaign, which had the bright idea of using a Screamer Prank in its advertising, complete with the iOS volume icon popping up and muting itself beforehand to trick mobile users into thinking their button was jammed and maxing out their volume, with unsuspecting YouTube viewers having no way to avoid it. YouTube quickly took it down after numerous complaints... and the crew promptly tried to turn this to their advantage by branding the film as so scary even its trailer was too disturbing for YouTube viewers.
  • So Okay, It's Average: The film has received largely mixed to negative reviews from critics, with a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics (although some viewers find it to be genuinely good) have stated that while the film isn't without its moments and has quite a few great performances, it's hampered by wasting interesting plots and focusing on scares with few lighter moments like what The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 did.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: There are those who feel that the covenants nuns are underused being Dead All Along and that the movie would have been stronger with more people actively struggling against Valak at the end.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Even most people who dislike the movie agree that the acting isn't to blame for its problems.
