YMMV / The Nightmare House

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Many examples, considering the majority of the action takes place in the characters' nightmares, and dreams are often ambiguous:
    • Why did Luan have her nightmare? Was she afraid that no one found her funny (as evidenced by the audience initially seeming like a Tough Room, and and Mr. Coconuts saying that she wasn't funny) or was she just lonely (hence the "I don't want to be alone" at the end)? Or was it both or neither?
    • In Lana's nightmare, why is Rita so cool with Lana being turned into a stereotypical "good girl"? The most common interpretation is that she actually requested this transformation, but it could also be that she was just taking Lana for a normal check-up but liked the change when it happened. If she did request it, did she come up with the idea on her own, or was Lynn Sr. in on it too?
    • Lola's nightmare:
      • Why did Lola have it? Was she having a fit of insecurity and feeling she wasn't beautiful? Or was she afraid of losing her beauty? Or was it more of a fear of losing her identity?
      • Did the judge actually take Lola's face, or did her words just unintentionally cause the face to fall off? Either way, the judge is bad news, since even if she didn't take Lola's face, she didn't mind it being gone.
    • Why did Lincoln have his nightmare? Is he afraid for his sisters' wellbeing? Does he fear that they have a bad reputation? Or, seeing as the story shares an author with Peeking Through the Fourth Wall, did he have the nightmare due to reading so much fanfiction which vilified his sisters? Or did he just get scared after watching a horror movie or something?
  • Funny Moments: There is an occasional moment of levity, for instance:
    • The potion that makes the spiders in Leni's nightmare grow is labelled "Super Spider Growy Stuff". Then, the spiders have this exchange:
Spider 1: "Perhaps we could enslave her!"
      Spider 2: "Or eat her!"
Spider 4: "Or eat her and then enslave her!... Okay, that last one didn't really make sense."
    • One of the things Mr. Coconuts says in Luan's nightmare is "You'll have to be a real dummy to come to this show. I should know!".
    • In Lynn's nightmare, Lincoln's disembodied head can talk.
    • From Lincoln's nightmare:
      • Lola gives herself away by inviting him to play with "me and Lola".
      • When Lincoln asks Lori for Bobby's full name, she replies, "Bobby Santiago the Third".
      • Not-Leni gives away the sisters' location by saying, "I thought we were keeping them downstairs to the basement" as a response to Not-Luan's lie that they sent them far away.
      • The box the sisters are trapped in has a tarp that reads, "DO NOT OPEN UNTIL X-MAS".
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • In Lincoln's nightmare, upon finding out his sisters are impostors, immediately demands to know where they are and becomes mad at the Sister Snatchers for calling them bad sisters. When he sees the sisters, he promises to set them free so they can be a family again and lets them know that they aren't bad.
    • When everyone wakes up, Lori decides to have everybody sleep in the living room, and then she will get up early and make everyone french toast for breakfast. Then Lynn, who had the dream about accidentally killing Lincoln, hugs him.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • In Lola's nightmare, she throws batons in the air, does a handstand, and catches them with her toes.
    • In Lincoln's nightmare, when Not-Lana tells him that he's a naive little boy who doesn't know what's good for him, Lincoln gives her a scathing reply!
Lincoln: "The hell I am! I'm eleven. I'm old enough to know what I want. And I'm old enough to know that I'd rather spend a decade locked in there with my sisters than spend a minute living with you... you creeps!"
  • Squick:
    • In Leni's nightmare, the sound of her legs being crushed is likened to the sound of "a truck running through mud".
    • Lucy's nightmare involves sweaty people puking black sludge on her.
    • In Lily's nightmare, "Mor-Gaj" has a "festering, pus-filled tongue" which wraps around her head.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • In Lori's nightmare, she's greatly affected by her siblings saying, "We don't need you", to the point where she's described as "doubling over in pain".
    • Luna's nightmare involves Mick Swagger appearing to be honouring her, but then he turns out to be "taking the piss" and tells her that she'll never be successful.
    • Luan's nightmare ends with her sobbing on the floor and shouting, "I don't want to be alone!".
    • In Lynn's nightmare, she accidentally kills Lincoln and feels awful about it. To make matters worse, Katherine Mulligan arrives and assumes Lynn did it on purpose.
    • Lucy's nightmare ends with her sitting on the floor crying silently.
