YMMV / The NewZealand Story

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The NES port (Kiwi Kraze) by Tim And Geoff Follin takes the already catchy arcade music and makes it better. It even includes an NES-exclusive title screen track, which is a memorable upbeat tune.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The first boss. Being eaten by a whale can be terrifying to some, not to mention that the way you defeat it is to shoot its insides until it falls apart.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: In the arcade edition, there are many enemies in the starting area of 1-1, and you have massive arrays of spikes up to 1-4 (possibly further). It's also possible to jump into a small room where the only option is to look for a hidden warp gate.
  • Spiritual Successor: Another Taito platformer named Liquid Kids (Mizubaku Adventure in Japan). Both of them feature cutesy animals trying to rescue their many relatives in every level, enemies that pop up from randomly appearing portals, warps to other levels that appear if you shoot into empty corners of the levels, and so on. They both share the same font for in-game messages!
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The boss theme is similar to the Jaws theme, with its alternating two notes played over and over.
