YMMV / The New York Ripper

  • Awesome Music: Say what you want about the film, but Francesco de Masi's jazz-tinged score is really good at capturing the seedy atmosphere of The Big Rotten Apple.
  • Narm: While the duck-like voice is perhaps something one could sit through without giving more than an initial chuckle at how silly it is, the fact that the killer frequently punctuates the more grisly and serious moments of the film by laughing exactly like Donald Duck means that it's next to impossible NOT to laugh at the ridiculous juxtaposition.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: As pointed out in virtually every review, this is an incredibly mean-spirited film with virtually none of the fun or intrigue that characterizes many of Lucio Fulci's other productions. The sickening Gorn doesn't help either.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The killer might have a sympathetic backstory, but you lose any and all sympathy when you see how much sadistic pleasure the killer takes in his work. It also doesn't excuse or explain why the killer commits these murders.
