YMMV / The New Legends Of Monkey

Go To

  • Adorkable: Each member of the main four displays some traits of this, even Monkey. Shadow Monkey is also quite cute regarding his genuine excitement at spending time with Monkey King, especially when he starts copying Monkey and calling him Brother
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Mothrax goes to stop the gang, but they can’t see her properly, so Pigsy lights a large fire. Mothrax, enthralled by the light, turns into a moth and flies directly into it, killing herself.
  • Awesome Ego: Monkey has a big ego, but it’s hard not to like the guy.
  • Fanfic Fuel: Season one ends with the group stating that their journey isn’t over yet, since there are more scrolls to find. Before the release of the second season, this left writers a lot of room to imagine what other perils the group could face on their quest.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The reason this series was made was because the Japanese show it was inspired by, Monkey, was very popular in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Ho Yay: Monkey and Pigsy. Especially when they’re under the influence of the love potion.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Monkey. His arrogance was what led to the events of the series, but he was manipulated by someone he thought was his friend, lost his mentor figure, became trapped in a mountain for five hundred years… It’s hard not to feel sorry for him.
    • Shadow Monkey to a degree. Although his intent to murder Tripitaka was unjustified, it ultimately arose from a combination of care towards Monkey, and being barely a few days old. He viewed Tripitaka as Monkey's captor/torturer in the same way Hagfish was his. At the end when he was screaming for his brother not to leave him, it hit rather hard just how heartbroken he was.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Tripitaka's use of the Headache Sutra occasionally veers into this. While it's ostensibly a failsafe to prevent Monkey from abandoning or disrupting the quest, she sometimes uses it during arguably petty moments such as whenever he disagrees with or upsets her. When Shadow Monkey draws comparisons between her and Hagfish, it's hard to deny that he may have a point.
