YMMV / The New Adventures of Invader Zim

Go To

  • Adorkable: Nyx comes across as this, with her unabashed, almost child-like fangirling of Zim.
  • Evil Is Cool: Norlock is one of the most outright villainous characters in the story, and is unabashedly cool.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The first chapter, written prior to the release of the first issue of the Invader Zim (Oni) series, features Dib almost getting into a dogfight with Zim with Tak's ship, only to realize that he doesn't know how to operate the ship's weapons, leading to Zim curb-stomping him. In Issue 2, Dib is facing down Zim in a spaceship dogfight, and realizes he doesn't know how to use the weapons... and Zim tells him how, leading to Zim being curb-stomped.
    • Episode 4 has, as one of MIMI's hallucinations, a Shout-Out to The Shining in the form of a pair of meat children asking her to come play with them forever. This was published in 2015; flash-forward to 2017, and the comic series has a similar joke, wherein Dib (in GIR's body) imagines a bunch of copies of GIR asking him to come play forever.
    • Senior is a Communications Officer on the Massive who has no problem talking back to the Tallest rather than deferring completely to their orders. Then along comes the movie, which features the otherwise unnamed Comms Officer, who keeps trying to call out the Tallest on their Too Dumb to Live actions regarding the Florpus.
    • Episode 4 is loosely based on the unproduced episode "GIR's Big Day", which would later go on to be adapted as the first issue in the quarterly format that the comic series switched to in 2020.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Gaz deciding to give Zim the location of Project Domination both to spite Dib and to hopefully get Viera killed.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Dib and Viera. The author has stated his intentions to pair the two together but so far they have shown little to no signs of having romantic feelings for one another. The most that happens is a Running Gag where others keep assuming that they are a couple.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Gaz's rant to Viera in Episode 8 about how the world is full of stupid and disgusting people who deserve to be conquered is obviously meant to portray her as selfish and horrible. But given the kind of world this story takes place in, some might have a hard time arguing with her.
  • Unexpected Character: The author has a habit of bringing back minor oneshot characters from canon and giving them parts in the story:
    • Absolutely no one expected Squidman to show up, considering his sole appearance ended with him being eaten by a shark.
    • No one was expecting Counselor Dwicky to appear, as his last appearance appeared to have him Put on a Bus.
