YMMV / The Magnus Protocol

  • Base-Breaking Character: Alice. Some fans love her quippy, irreverent attitude, while other fans hate her for the exact same, feeling that her behavior as The Gadfly goes too far into just being mean. It doesn't help that she's completely uninterested in the case files, outright saying she just skims them for keywords and encourages Sam to do the same; this is either a refreshing and realistic attitude to the supernatural or a frustrating refusal to engage with the plot.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • As soon as the casting list was revealed, theories were already spinning about Jonathan Sims and Alexander J. Newall, who voiced the main characters in the original series and suffered an Uncertain Doom, voicing two characters with scratched out names, most of the theories positing that they are playing their original characters somehow having survived the end of the original series. Their characters being revealed to be mysterious data voices that read out "statements," voices which only started reading around the time period that TMA ended, did little to quell the theorizing.
    • The casting list also revealed that one character is named Gwendolyn Bouchard, who notably shares her last name with the main villain of the previous series. Theories immediately popped up that Gwen is an Alternate Self of Elias, that she's a relative, or even that she is Elias, who, without being possessed by Jonah Magnus, has transitioned.
    • Related to both of the above, the moment the third voice, Augustus, was revealed, people began speculating that it was in fact the original voice of Jonah Magnus.
    • People started to speculate that the fears might've combined or mixed after escaping the TMA universe due to TMP's cases giving vibes of the 14 fears, but instead of focusing on one fear in particular, each case seems to be a combination of two or more.
    • The new hire Celia having the same voice actress as the "Celia" Melanie and Georgie rescued in TMA, who had previously given a statement as "Lynne Hammond" to Martin in "I Guess You Had To Be There" about the ghost of a burning woman, raises questions of if they're one and the same given how she says she doesn't "scare so easy these days".
  • One True Pairing: So far the most popular ship in the fandom (aside from Chester/Norris which is really just Fanon carrying over Jon/Martin from the original) seems to be Gwen/Alice, in large parts due to the dynamic of a serious and grumpy professional and a sarcastic jokester who takes nothing seriously.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: A number of fans have taken to calling the ship between Alice Dyer and Gwen Bouchard "Dyhard."
