YMMV / The Look of Silence

Go To

  • Moment of Awesome: Even though the interviews themselves are Nightmare Fuel, it takes serious balls for Adi to go and confront the men who killed his family and openly ask them about their actions. Most of the interviewees openly threaten to kill him, but he continues his quest anyway.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Most of the movie.
    • Naturally, all of the interviews with death squad members, including Inong recounting how his men would drink their victims' blood to keep from going insane, as well as vividly describing how he cut a woman's breasts off. Later in the film, another aging death squad member fondly recounts cutting a Chinese girl's head off and setting it down in front of a Chinese-owned coffee shop purely For the Evulz.
    • The interview with Amir Hasan. He quickly goes from deflecting blame for his actions to not-so-subtly threatening to murder Adi and his whole family.
Amir: These days, subversives are everywhere. The known communists aren't dangerous. It's the secret ones who are dangerous. Maybe what you're doing right now is a secret communist activity!
Amir: ...You can't even imagine it. Under the dictatorship? When everything was tense? You can't imagine what would have happened. So... Keep going. Continue with this communist activity.
    • The Reveal of how exactly Ramli died. He was taken out into a field, stabbed repeatedly, and disemboweled, but somehow managed to escape and run home. The killers find him again in the morning and promise to take him to the hospital, only to take him out to the river, stab him several more times in the back, and then castrate him and dump his body into the water.
    • Even though it's unrelated to the genocide, the sight of Adi's dad crawling around his own home in confusion, crying out for help because he thinks he's wondered into a stranger's house and can't get out, is deeply uncomfortable in an almost Lynchian way.
  • Squick: Inong goes into a lot of detail describing what it looked like after he cut a woman's breasts off.
  • Tear Jerker: Again, heavy amounts.
    • Adi and Kemat visiting the site of the massacre. While Adi is completely silent, Kemat starts talking out loud to himself, praying for God to lay the spirits of the dead to rest and punish their killers.
    • Adi's mom recounting the last night she saw Ramli, after he escaped the killing fields and dragged himself home while covered in blood. In the morning the death squads came to take him away again, and though she knew what was going to happen she was completely powerless to stop it.
    • Adi's mom meeting Kemat near the end of the movie, and just breaking down in tears as the memory of the genocide comes flooding back to her.
  • The Woobie: Kemat and Adi's mom, both of whom survived the genocide and lost countless loved ones, only to be forced to live peaceably next to the men who butchered their families, unable to do anything but wish for God to torment them in the afterlife.
