YMMV / The Long Goodbye

The film

  • Award Snub: Given that it was written by Oscar faves Johnny Mercer and John Williams, you'd think the theme song would have at least gotten a nomination, but no.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: That security guard who does impressions (played by Ken Sansom, who later voiced Rabbit).
  • He Really Can Act: Former baseballer Jim Bouton (Terry) and singer/socialite Nina van Pallandt (Eileen) turn in solid performances in their acting debuts.
  • Retroactive Recognition: A mustachioed Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his second film appearance in an uncredited, nonspeaking role as one of Marty Augustine's thugs.
  • Vindicated by History: A box office failure in 1973 that was derided by Marlowe purists, it's now recognized as a classic, with some critics even arguing that its version of Marlowe is truer to Raymond Chandler's vision of the character than any other film.
