- Ass Pull: The sleeping spell put on Dinty by Mag is broken by Blarney reconciling with his wife. It's not story-breaking, but still noticeable. Some viewers just assume Christmas morning breaks the spell.
- Awesome Music: As can be expected from a Rankin/Bass special, nearly all of the songs are this, especially the main theme ("The Rainbow's End") and the Kilarney's gold-mining song ("The Golden Gold of Ireland").
- Ink-Suit Actor: Blarney looks like Art Carney shrunk to the size of a leprechaun.
- It's Short, So It Sucks!: One of the special's issues is that unlike most Rankin/Bass works that go an hour which gives more than enough time to flesh out their premises, this only goes half an hour, which unfortunately doesn't seem long enough for the plot to really make any actual sense.
- Magnificent Bitch: Mag is a master at doing this, successfully pulling the wool over the eyes of Fay and Dinty and causing them to make some rash decisions.
- Nightmare Fuel: Colene's
◊ Nightmare Face as she reveals her true identity as Mag the Hag. - Special Effect Failure: Mag the Hag's defeat, most notably the ocean wave obviously being cel-animated, contrasting with the stop-motion puppet characters.
