- Values Dissonance: Racial attitudes are not at their most enlightened in this book, and may cause modern readers to raise their eyebrows somewhat. Dora Chapin, an African-American, is described in rather animalistic terms and one character casually refers to her using the "N" word at one point. Archie also casually uses the word "lop" to describe the disabled Paul Chapin.
