YMMV / The Land Before Time V: The Mysterious Island

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Some differences between people are simply too vast for friendship to cross.
  • Awesome Music: "Always There" is one of the best and most beloved songs of the entire series. A longing, vulnerable lullaby with a wonderful piano and violin backing, this song also has a truly beautiful chorus:
Always there... Someone you can count on to comfort you... Always there... like a green, green valley, you can come home to.
  • Badass Decay: Mama Sharptooth is still a full-grown T. rex, but unlike her first film where she nearly killed Grandpa Longneck by herself and was basically equal in every way with her husband, here she fails to land a hit on the Plated Sharptooth while Papa Sharptooth lands two, implying she's the weaker of the pair.
  • Continuity Lockout: This is the first sequel film that requires you to have seen a movie other than the original to understand everything that's going on.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The Plated Sharptooth (a Giganotosaurus), despite his limited screentime, has left quite an impression on the fandom, for being an utterly terrifying Knight of Cerebus that could give the original Sharptooth a run for his money. He cements his badass credentials by holding his own while fighting two T. rex.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Plated Sharptooth is mostly agreed to be a Giganotosaurus by fans. Funnily enough, Giganotosaurus would be featured in another dinosaur movie later down the line where it is depicted being a giant carnivore with stripes running across its body and spikes aligning its back.
    • For added bonus, both dinosaurs from their respective movies get to fight a T-Rex and overpower them.
    • The aforementioned movie also has a locust swarm as a major plot point, much like this one.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: If nothing else, the TV Series took this film's Bittersweet Ending and retconned it away, meaning Chomper can be with his friends despite being a Sharptooth.
  • Once Original, Now Common: When The Mysterious Island was first released, it was unique for being the only movie in the series where a character introduced in a sequel film came back, and it was fan-favorite Chomper, of all people. Nowadays, with Chomper being an Ascended Extra in the TV series and characters like Mo and Bron showing up in films outside their debut, it's much less big of a deal.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The Swarming Leaf-Gobblers and the Swimming Sharptooth, who both get maybe two minutes of screentime tops but make the most of it.
  • Pandering to the Base: What else could explain the return of Chomper?
  • Signature Scene: Chomper's parents vs. the Plated Sharptooth.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Due to bringing back fan-favorite Chomper, a higher-stakes plot, more action and better pacing, and one of the most competent and intimidating villains of the series outside of the original Sharptooth, this film is often considered an improvement over films 2-4 (which themselves are now considered some of the better sequels, as there have been many weaker ones released since; 4 in particular also carries the Surprisingly Improved Sequel status).
