YMMV / The Land Before Time VII: The Stone of Cold Fire

Go To

  • Broken Base: The Rainbow Faces being strongly implied to be Aliens Among Us is either a fascinating mystery or a completely ridiculous plot point that shows how low the sequels would go, depending on who you ask.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience:
    • Pterano shows symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Given what he's been through, this isn't surprising.
    • Sierra, likewise, is viewed as a low-functioning sociopath by many, citing his complete Lack of Empathy (like when Ducky seemingly falls to her death while being chased by him) and Hair-Trigger Temper.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse
    • Pterano is a favorite among fans thanks to his enjoyably hammy personality, tragic backstory, and most of all, for being a surprisingly complex Anti-Villain who eventually performs a Heel–Face Turn. In a series that largely functions on Black-and-White Morality, having a morally complex character like Pterano is a refreshing change of pace and many fans were upset that he never reappeared.
    • The Rainbow Faces are popular among fans of the sequels for the implication that they're aliens, the funny moments that come from the male's Saying Too Much problem and his partner's Deadpan Snarker reactions to it, and their child-friendly points about scientific curiosity.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • Pterano coming back is a popular subject in the fan fic community. Whether he serves out his sentence and reunites with an older Petrie, or is allowed back into the Great Valley after somehow redeeming himself in the eyes of the other adults depends on the story. Alternatively, fics might focus on his time in exile, which tend to involve Sierra and Rinkus seeking payback.
    • The Rainbow Faces are strongly implied to be aliens who came to blend in among the dinosaurs. There are many fanfics that explore what their civilization and culture may be like, and what their motivations are.
  • It Was His Sled: The Rainbow Faces are aliens. As the only film in the series with a big reveal, and one so completely unexpected at that, it's hard to talk about Stone of Cold Fire without giving this away.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Pterano. Yeah, he's arrogant and does some pretty crappy things, but given how badly he's haunted by the fact that he unintentionally led some herd members to their deaths during the migration to the Great Valley, it's hard not to feel at least a little sorry for him.
  • Memetic Mutation: The "Phonofoot" meme is an image of Littlefoot with a phonograph over his head while saying "And it flew real low". note
  • Moral Event Horizon: Sierra once he almost kills Ducky For the Evulz.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Generally considered one of the stronger sequels for exploring what happened offscreen in the original, and for having an antagonist with much more complex motivations than the usual hungry sharpteeth.
