• Award Snub: The series was largely ignored during awards season, although it did manage to score a nomination for Steven Soderbergh's direction.
• Awesome Music: Soderbergh posse member Cliff Martinez's anachronistic electronic soundtrack is regarded as one of the show's high points.
• Funny Moments:
  • In episode 4, Edwards is sneaking downstairs to run his clinic at the exact same time Barrow is sneaking into the morgue to steal a corpse. Both of them proceed to engage in an awkward conversation while at the same time sneaking off to their destinations.
  • Cleary clubbing Brockhurst with a baseball bat.
• Moment of Awesome:
  • The climatic surgery in "Method and Madness", where Thack anesthetizes the patient using cocaine.
  • Quite a few of the cast get one in "Get the Rope". Thackery overcomes his racism to help and protect the black patients from the mob determined to kill them, and Cleary gets several of them to another hospital by pulling the ambulance after the horse is stolen, while Lucy tricks the people who accost them into believing the people they're transporting died from leprosy. Sister Harriet, meanwhile, escorts a whole party to the sanctuary of a church, brandishing a cross and threatening their attackers with hell fire and damnation.
• Squick: The surgery scenes are extremely graphic. In particular, virtually the first scene of the show is of a pregnant woman bleeding to death.
• Tear Jerker:
  • Bertie failing to operate on his mother's cancer. She dies.
  • Thackery's death at the end of the second season.
