YMMV / The Knack

Go To

  • Awesome Music: "My Sharona", of course, but several other tracks from their debut album as well, like "Good Girls Don't" and "Frustrated".
  • First Installment Wins: Get the Knack is their most successful album, also containing their two most famous songs, "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't".
  • Hype Backlash: One of the most famous examples in pop/rock music history with the "Knuke the Knack" movement.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: ...But The Little Girls Understand got hit hard with this when compared to Get the Knack; particularly, lead single "Baby Talks Dirty" got panned by critics for sounding too much like "My Sharona", especially after being released only six months after "Sharona".
  • Narm: "Baby Talks Dirty" from their second LP, which has Doug having an orgasm throughout the track. Eww.
  • Seasonal Rot: Everything after their first LP was an immediate downward slop in quality, due to most of their songs sounding exactly the same with no more catchy hooks or melodies. The liner notes for ...But the Little Girls Understand even say: "The songs are an assortment of feelings and emotions expressed redundantly as only The Knack can... This record is very dear to me and my bank manager."
  • Values Dissonance: You don't have to be a women's studies professor to see the soaring sexism in their lyrics.
    • "My Sharona" was written about a real life 17 year old girl, Sharona Alperin, who Doug Fieger was infatuated with when he was 25. Needless to say, talking openly about that sort of relationship in a song would not fly so well today.
