- Ho Yay: Between being willing to kill and be killed for one another, to their mutual suicide, Jang-saeng and Gong-gil definitely give off the vibe of being more than just buddies. Contrast with Gong-gil and the King, whose relationship, though not based on reciprocal affection, is much more heavily implied.
- Tear Jerker:
- The king uses hand puppets to reenact his younger self pleading with his father for information about his Missing Mom.
- Gong-gil cuts himself and nearly bleeds out while "backstage" during another puppet show.
- The Woobie: Gong-gil. Jang-saeng is an Iron Woobie by the end of the film, still retaining his Heroic Spirit.
