  • Audience-Alienating Era: Many critics claimed this film was the start of one for Peckinpah, the point at which he effectively "sold out" to commercial interests.
  • Narm: The presence of ninjas and high-flying kung fu assassins, replete with shuriken and katanas, in an otherwise serious and grounded 1970s political thriller, can come across as this. Many critics at the time pointed this out, with some suggesting that it was Sam Peckinpah's attempt at satirizing kung-fu films.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: One scene is set near the double-decker Embarcadero Freeway, which got damaged in the 1989 San Francisco earthquake and was torn down a few years later.
