YMMV / The John Larroquette Show

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The show featured Larroquette playing John Hemingway, an acerbic recovering alcoholic. The first season was insightful, provoking, filled with race baiting humor, and a bartender was implied to be Satan. Thanks to Executive Meddling, the show was made Lighter and Softer, alienating those faithful viewers who did watch the show.
  • Memetic Mutation: "KILL WHITEY!"
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: While his relationships with Catherine and Carly were well-liked individually, their Love Triangle was considered the nadir of the show.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Symbolic?: Essentially a large part of the show's presence is that John Hemmingway is a far-too-intelligent philosopher and writer that happens to be stuck with a job he doesn't even remember getting, surrounded by oddballs. It has been compared to Purgatory and Hell at various times. Lightened up in later seasons when it's clear that John has Delusions of Eloquence.
