YMMV / The Ink Black Heart

Go To

  • Bile Fascination: Some people grew morbidly interested in the book once it was revealed that the plot involved a popular content creator getting accused of ableism and racism before being murdered — which, minus the murder, seems to parallel the backlash JK Rowling had been facing for her own views on transgender people. That being said, there's an equal number of people suggesting that the book be ignored entirely to ensure that it can fade into obscurity fast enough for Rowling to have less of a platform to share these views.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Flavia Upcott only physically appears in 4 out of 107 chapters, but her mixture of Adorably Precocious Child moments and perceptive Wise Beyond Their Years comments make her one of the most endearing guest characters in the book to many fans.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The Strike and Robin romance could have been interesting as the pair need to work out how to balance a new side of their relationship with the agency. Instead, the first chapter hits the Reset Button and the rest of the book drags out the angst as they keep making false assumptions about each other's feelings and romantic lives and utterly fail to talk things out, with the final chapter having Robin accepting a date from a Romantic False Lead and Strike lamenting to himself how he should've taken his own advice and opened his eyes.
