YMMV / The Hobbits

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: No, the title has nothing at all to do with a halfling's bosom. It simply means "The Hobbits"
  • Awesome Music: The song Frodo sings at The Prancing Pony, at least once the instruments kick in.
  • Funny Moments: In the first episode, Bilbo instantly knows the answer to Klonkku's third riddle (the one about darkness), and calmly proceeds to recite his next riddle while Klonkku makes angry noises in the background.
  • Narm:
    • Some of the acting - particulary that of the young Bilbo - has been criticised for this. Not helped by the actor having crooked fish eyes, a less than intelligent sounding voice and a pretty ridiculous looking Porn Stache, thus making him probably the furthest thing from what Tolkien envisioned Bilbo Baggins to look and sound like.
    • The Ringwraiths, given that their horses contantly spin around on the spot whenever they're onscreen. This is not helped by the fact that the same pieces of footage are reused constantly.
    • Gandalf and Klonkku's Disney Villain Deaths, due to how fake they look. Especially the former's, since his confrontation with the Balrog was cut, which makes it look like he just clumsly falls down into a hole. It also doesn't help that they both spin around as if they're being flushed down a toilet.
  • Narm Charm: Practically a requirement for enjoying the series. For instance, during the journey down the Great River, it's very obvious that the actors are not actually in a boat, but rather in front of a Greenscreen, and Boromir's overly serious expression is outright Narm, but Galadriel's song still gives the scene a sense of beauty.
  • Older Than They Think: While he doesn't have the same body type, Klonkku is quite similar to Gollum from the New Line Cinema Movie Trilogy both in terms of looks and demeanor, moreso than other incarnations of the character. These are also the only two versions of the story where Merry and Pippin suddenly run into the Council of Elrond, offering to join Frodo on his quest. Maybe a certain New Zealand director took some inspiration from this series when making his own adaptation of the story?
  • Squick: Klonkku/Gollum's junk. That is all.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • Several shots are done with rather obvious models, and Chroma Key is frequently and noticeably used, even for simple things like characters walking through a forest!
    • Just about every wig / beard to appear in the series also look pretty fake.
  • Woolseyism: The first episode includes a neat little detail that wasn't present in the original Hobbit: Klonkku's "precious" Verbal Tic is translated into "treasure" (aarre), so when Bilbo tells him a riddle that mentions a golden treasure, Klonkku suddenly becomes fixated on the word.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?: Most of the costumes look pretty good, considering that the series had No Budget. But some of its character designs were just... a bit strange.
    • Boromir is a Caucasian Samurai with a rather anachronistic, but still pretty cool dragon tattoo.
    • Tom Bombadil is beardless, and resembles a Native American Shaman.
    • Bilbo is given a huge mustache, making him look more like a dwarf than the group's actual dwarf Gimli, who merely has Perma-Stubble by comparison.
    • Gandalf the White looks like a Kabuki actor.
