YMMV / The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn't a Guy At All

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: After the temporary falling-out between Aya and Mitsuki over her learning of the latter's identity as "Onii-san" resulted in a debate among the fandom as to who was more at fault, bordering on Broken Base. Those who sympathize more with Aya believe that Mitsuki was at fault for not disclosing her identity to Aya despite seeing Aya regularly at school and the music shop, and thus unwittingly strung Aya along. Those who sympathize more with Mitsuki argue that she was under no obligation to disclose everything to a casual acquaintance and that she had no idea that Aya had any particular interest in her apart from being a regular customer.
  • Arc Fatigue: While the inevitable Internal Reveal of Mitsuki's identity as the record store clerk to Aya doesn't take too long to happen, the resulting angst over the reveal and Aya and Mitsuki avoiding each other drags on a bit too long for some people's tastes, lasting from Chapter 18 to the end of Chapter 26.
  • Awesome Art: The manga's art has received praise for the high quality, good character designs and use of color.
  • Better on DVD: While the manga gets new chapters more frequently than other doujins, those chapters are only four pages long (due to its original format as Twitter-based web manga) As such, it can be more enjoyable to binge dozens of chapters of the manga in the time it takes to read a few chapters of a manga with longer chapters.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Narita, aka "Jerkface," a secondary character, soon became popular as a Shipper on Deck.
  • Fan Nickname: Before Narita's name was revealed, the fans called him "Jerkface," since that's what Aya called him.
    • Thanks to the series' famous use of neon green as a Splash of Color, as well as its unwieldy Work Info Title, some fans have taken to calling it "The Green Manga."
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Narita, aka "Jerkface" was almost immediately disliked when he tried using his charms to get Mitsuki to give him her homework and insulted her when she politely said no, seemingly establishing him as a borderline Hate Sink. However, in later chapters, he soon turned out to be a Shipper on Deck and a Jerk with a Heart of Gold, which has quickly redeemed him in the eyes of the fandom.
  • Values Dissonance: Mitsuki is said to have done well on Modern Japanese, getting a 65 out of 100 (as opposed to getting 30 points or less in her worst subjects), which is a passing grade in the Japanese education system, but would be at or near failing in American schools.
