• Ass Pull: The Valeyard's presence was not hinted at anywhere in the story so his appearance at the end comes right out of nowhere.
• The Chris Carter Effect: As expressed in quite frustrated fashion by several of the story's contributors, the person chosen to finish the story once the time came around for as much largely only followed up upon the most bare bones of the plot leading up to the ending while largely ignoring everything else, resulting in a sizable number of plot threads that had been introduced by the contributors who came before him being left unresolved by the time the story was complete.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Chewbacca dies and is later resurrected. In 2014, the year after the story was written, the Star Wars Expanded Universe was rebranded as Star Wars Legends and declared to be non-canon. This meant that Chewbacca's death in the novel Vector Prime was essentially undone and he subsequently appeared alive and well in the Sequel Trilogy.
• Unexpected Character: James Bond is from the spy genre so he, M and Q stick out like sore thumbs amid all the sci-fi characters.
