  • Americans Hate Tingle: The operetta was one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular in England but never had much appeal in the U.S. except to serious G&S enthusiasts. One highly-promoted American production, according to George Jean Nathan, gave the show the rueful nickname "The Gone Dollars."
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Gilbert himself recognized that Inez's last-minute revelation that the King and her own son were Switched at Birth was almost exactly the same as the resolution of H.M.S. Pinafore. For this reason, he and Sullivan decided not to write a song for Inez and just get it over with in a few lines of recitative.
