YMMV / The Gentlemen's Alliance

  • Broken Base: This is either considered one of Tanemura's worst series or one of her best (though most agree it's very flawed).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Komaki, according to a character popularity poll that ran during the manga's serialisation; Tanemura herself was surprised by that. Maora also deserves mention.
  • One True Threesome: Canonically! Haine initially says she wants to marry both Takanari and Shizumasa, the latter of whom seems perfectly fine with this.
    • Of course, she did actually choose Takanari.
  • Portmanteau Series Nickname: ShinKuro, as given in the manga's free-talk columns.
  • The Scrappy: Fans aren't all that fond of Senri, due to his creepiness and the fact that nobody seems to call him out on it. Him getting together with Ushio is also seen as disturbing and not at all romantic.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: After Haine's horrible past, the revelation comes with Maora and then we have the horrible, convoluted mess of a dark past for Shizumasa and Takanari, as well as the entire Togu family to add. Along with the Broken Base above, it can be difficult to continue with the manga, before giving up because everything is just too dramatized.
  • Values Dissonance: The downright cringeworthy way Ushio's feelings for Haine are wrapped up, for starters. (Japan is still a fairly homophobic country.) The rather clumsy treatment of the other LGBT characters deserves mention too.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: This actually ran in a magazine aimed at elementary-aged girls. Despite this, it tends to explore rather mature themes, like the fact that Ushio Really Gets Around.
