YMMV / The Fury

Go To

  • Awesome Music: John Williams (yes, the John Williams) composed the Herrmann-esque score.
  • Complete Monster: Ben Childress is the supposed friend of the hero Peter, but is in truth a devious sociopath who runs the PSI program to find psychic children to turn into weapons. Childress proceeds to murder their families and abduct the children, torturing them and conditioning them to break them down and leave nothing but psychic assassins for him, gaslighting them relentlessly and destroying anything close to them. When Peter survives and tries to save his son Robin, Childress tries to have him killed and even engineers a confrontation between them before plotting to take the heroine Gillian and mold her into his new weapon by the end.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • James Belushi was hired and fired as an extra on this film. If you look closely at the tracking shots of Amy Irving in her swimsuit, you can see Belushi in a pair of dark trunks a few steps behind Irving.
    • Daryl Hannah and Laura Innes also make their film debuts as Pam and Jody respectively.
    • One of the off-duty cops who get carjacked by Peter is a young, clean-shaven Dennis Franz.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • The amusement park Susan takes Robin to was Old Chicago, an ambitious attempt to build a mall around an indoor park. Too ambitious, since it closed in 1981 after just six years in operation.
    • Gillian and Hester play the Fairchild Channel F (including the rather-familiar-looking "Tennis" game), which was the first cartridge-based video game system, and was brand new at the time of filming. By the time the film hit theaters the Atari 2600 had been released and quickly outpaced the Channel F in sales.
  • The Woobie:
    • Peter gets betrayed by Childress and his son, Robin gets kidnapped and even fails to save him in the end. The poor guy even gets Driven to Suicide.
    • Gillian is no slouch either. Her psychic powers harm others when they touch her and she gets frightened by this, and she even fails to save Robin too.
