  • Alternative Character Interpretation: The first time we see Joey, he surprises his sister in the shower with a rubber knife as a prank and later, goes to the carnival to find her. People have reacted to this in two ways: 1) he is an Annoying Younger Sibling who just wants to play pranks and is too young to understand how odd it might be to see his sister naked (or at the very least, he is in a family who might be less modest than others) or 2) a creepy sociopath who watches his sister in the shower and silently stalks her.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Ellen (at least in the novelization). Yes, she is a alcoholic hypocrite who is an almost-frightening Christian, who has an obsession with sin and has an uncomfortable habit of sneaking into her young son's room to watch him suspiciously as he sleeps. However, it is not very hard to understand why: as a teenager, Ellen's attempt at rebelling against her parents led her to be trapped in an abusive common-law marriage with a Satanist who used her to breed a deformed child who he claimed was the Antichrist. After the child dies, Ellen manages to escape, but the experience has left her with severe trauma and obvious mental health issues - which are never addressed, as this happened in The '60s and The '70s, when the treatment of mental health was much more problematic and shamed than it is now. Not to mention Ellen is right to be paranoid about her children's welfare, although not quite the way she thinks, as her ex-husband has spent the last twenty years trying to find her children so he can murder them in revenge.
  • Les Yay: The girls are really interested to peek the strip show. Upped by a factor in the novelization during an additional scene where the two girls discuss possibly taking their dates home for what sounds like a sort of foursome but which, it is implied, would really come down to the two girls...enjoying themselves with each other. There's even a breast grope mentioned.
