YMMV / The Electric Tale of Pikachu

Go To

  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Nevermind the nice art or interesting take on the anime, everyone only discusses the female fanservice. Especially well known is Misty's sling bikini from her gym fight.
  • Broken Aesop: This manga's take on the episode featuring Mikey's Eevee. The original message was that unevolved Pokemon are just as valid as evolved Pokemon because of their own unique traits, and he supposedly proves it by beating his three brothers. In the manga, however, Ash carries him through every battle. Though the victories against Vaporeon and Flareon were Played for Laughs as Pikachu effortlessly roasts them, even in the Jolteon battle, the only reason Eevee triumphs is because Ash decides to use a mid-battle TM on it (and to top it off, it was Mimic, meaning it wasn't even Eevee itself succeeding on its own merits).
  • Broken Base: The Fanservice (and its censoring) and Rocketshipping becoming canon have all led to this series becoming a touchy subject with the fandom.
  • Fetish Retardant:
    • The famous bath scene in the uncensored version is impossible to take seriously when Misty states that she wants her breasts to evolve.
    • Then there's the fact that there a lot of cheesecake of Misty despite the fact she's 12 years old in the comic.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In the uncensored editions of the manga, Misty's sisters wear jackets over swimsuits when working at the Cerulean Gym—exactly as Misty ends up doing in Pokémon Gold and Silver.
    • With Ash's Pidgeotto being revealed to be female, it effectively makes her nickname here (Walter Pidgeotto) a Gender-Blender Name.
    • Misty has a Gyarados and Poliwhirl, long before she got them in the anime.
  • It Was His Sled: The manga ends with Jessie and James reformed, married, and expecting. It's a twist but the ending is one of the most discussed parts of the manga, especially since they haven't done anything of the sort in the anime.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many Rocketshippers bought the final volume entirely for the final scene of Jessie and James together and Jessie pregnant, enough to significantly jack up its price for a time.
  • Moral Event Horizon: The Black Fog eating souls of people and Pokémon alike for many years makes it break this all the way into the past. In the present day, it breaks this through its Establishing Character Moment by putting Sabrina in a coma.
  • No Yay: Bill and Professor Oak.
  • Older Than They Think: Misty has a Gyarados and Poliwag which later evolves into Poliwhirl before she did in the anime.
  • Periphery Demographic:
    • Well, despite the Hotter and Sexier status, it's a rich mine for Pokéshipping and especially Rocketshipping.
    • Lore fans find this series, much like Pocket Monsters: The Animation, interesting not for its infamous nature (in this case its sexual artwork) but for its expansion on elements from the anime and different takes on controversial moments in the series (for example a much more liked take on the Ash versus Ritchie battle than the anime provided).
  • Signature Scene:
    • Misty's Swimsuit Scene from her Gym Battle against Ash.
    • Ash and Richie's vicious, out-of-control Charizard duel.
    • The ending page that shows Jessie and James together and expecting a baby.
  • Values Dissonance: Much of the fan service is of a twelve-year-old. The official translations censored it, but they couldn't completely whitewash the jokes.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: The uncensored edition of this shonen manga's artwork was done by a hentai artist, turning something that is a TY-Y show at first straight into a full on Ecchi. All the characters have huge busts and are shown off frequently, most female characters show off lots of cleavage or Underboobs. There's also a bath scene where Misty is shown to start playing with her breasts such as massaging herself so she could get them larger and this was just a scheme made by Ash so Ash could perv on her. Ash is also a Lovable Sex Maniac. It also doesn't mind hiding the brutality of Pokémon battles with a couple of fights sporting high amounts of blood including the last battle. Needless to say, this uncensored version is very adult despite it being a Pokémon manga. That said, the main one that was sold censored doesn't count as this, though it still has more graphic stuff than the typical Pokémon anime and games.
