- Values Dissonance: When April and Melanie discuss the murder, Melanie observes that April is well-read but only had access to "the children's part of libraries." In those days, public libraries restricted underage people to the children's room — mature content, not just sexually explicit, was off limits. If you said you were doing a school report, they'd assume you were lying. Some places even required adults to make a special request at the desk.note In the early 1970s many libraries lifted the bans. By the late 1980s, Moral Guardians insisted on restoring them, with today's libraries facing complicated challenges. Members of the American Library Association are working to stop restricted access to information.
